Mobius report 41/2022 – Thwarted RCIED Attack with RC Initiation System Set, Syria

On April 22, 2022, Turkish security forces thwarted an attempted smuggling of explosives from Syria to Turkey near the border town of Ras al-Ayn, in Al-Hasakah Governorate, in northeastern Syria. Acting on intelligence information, security forces that arrived in the area arrested two operatives of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units and recovered an IED, which was reportedly intended for use in an attack in Turkey. An RC initiation system set, comprising a receiver and transmitter, both improvised, was seized together with the IED. The receiver and transmitter were packed in separate, matching rectangular white boxes, with thick black antennas, with the difference being three control buttons on the transmitter. Similar sets of improvised RC initiation systems have been documented in increasing numbers in areas bordering Turkey and Syria, with this model representing a continuation of the series of improvised RC initiation systems known to be used by Kurdish armed groups in the region since mid-2021.
