On July 30, 2022, a VBIED attack was thwarted in the city of Popayán, capital of Cauca department, in western Colombia.
The main charge explosive of the neutralized VBIED comprised two large gas cylinders filled with commercial explosives and an initiation system based on a WIFI smart switch. WIFI-based RC initiation systems have both advantages and disadvantages.
Notably, this appears to be the first incident in which an IED with a WIFI-based initiation system was identified and documented in Colombia.
The FARC dissident Carlos Patiño Front was blamed by the Colombian government for the attempted attack, the second thwarted attack by the group targeting police forces in Popayán within a 24-hour period.
