Mobius report 78/2022 – Russian Shaped Charges Documented in the Ukrainian Arena

Amid the continuation and intensification of the fighting in Ukraine, particularly between March 8 and October 4, 2022, the use of different standard shaped mines of Russian production to target infrastructure, by both the Russian and Ukrainian sides, was documented. These standard charges, known items from the Russian mine arsenal (also common in the Ukrainian Army,) have thus far been used to sabotage and destroy bridges and water culverts in controlled explosions, aimed at delaying the advancement of enemy forces along a specific route. Notably, of the extensive family of Russian standard shaped mines designed to damage infrastructure currently in service, only a handful of models have been documented in Ukraine. At the same time, a much more widespread use of non-standard items or weapons not specifically designed to destroy infrastructure in targeted sabotage operations has been evidenced, including a variety of mines, ammunition, and military and commercial demolition charges.
