TGA0752 – Weapons Used by Rebel Groups in Chad

On August 10, 2023, Chadian military forces thwarted an attack by militants of the Military Command Council for the Salvation of the Republic in northern Chad, close to the border with Libya. Among the weapons that were seized from the arrested rebels were improvised shoulder-fired launchers rigged to fire S-5 rockets, which were also seized on the same occasion. Similar recent incidents shed light on the weapons in the possession of the CCMSR and other Chadian rebel groups, which rely mostly on standard items imported or smuggled into Chad from Libya and other neighboring countries. The improvised launchers for S-5 rockets are reminiscent of launchers produced in the Gaza Strip and Libya, which may have inspired the Chadian rebels to assemble their own variants, and can attest to the existence of a local small-scale weapons industry.
