Mobius 8/2024 – Murad-5 UAS Deployed as Loitering Munitions Attack US Forces in Iraq & Syria

On January 16, 2024, a UAS deployed as a loitering munition crashed in Al-Alam Subdistrict, north of the city of Tikrit, in Salah al-Din Governorate in Iraq. The wreckage suggests it was a Murad-5 UAV, adorned with stickers featuring images of Qasem Suleimani, former Iranian Quds Force Commander, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, the founder of the Iraqi Shiite Hezbollah Brigades militia and Commander of the Popular Mobilization Unit, and Ali Hasan al-Ameri, also known as Abu Adam, who was killed in a US air raid in December 2023.
Starting from mid-October 2023, the Iran-backed Shiite group known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq intensified attacks against US military bases and assets in Syria and Iraq, utilizing the Iranian-made Murad-5, also known as Shahed-101. These UAVs were likely smuggled into Iraq dismantled and assembled by the group’s militants. The Murad-5 serves as a major asset for the group in targeting both Iraqi and Syrian long-range targets, including those in Israel.
