Mobius 15/2024 – IED Attacks in Burkina Faso and Niger

Since early 2023, jihadist activity in the Sahel countries, particularly Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, has significantly expanded, taking advantage of the ongoing political instability in the region. During this escalation, a noticeable surge in the use of IEDs is evident, mainly deep in the territory of Burkina Faso and along its borders. These attacks are perpetrated mainly by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, and to a lesser extent by the Islamic State – Sahel Province. Niger has increasingly become an active scene of jihad and IED attacks, predominantly carried out by IS militants. The activity is focused in the southwest of the country, near the borders with Burkina Faso and Benin, where ISSP operates, and in the southeast of the country, near the borders with Nigeria and Chad, and in the Lake Chad area – the center of activity of the Islamic State – West Africa Province.
