On April 2, 2024, the Russian Federal Security Service announced the dismantling of a smuggling network involved in trafficking explosives and initiation systems concealed inside Russian Orthodox Church icons and church accessories from Ukraine into Russia via European Union countries. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Federal Customs Service at the Russia-Latvia border. The attempted smuggling of IEDs and explosives into Russia, with the aim of perpetrating attacks within the country, sometimes successfully, via a long and winding route spanning many European countries, points to an attempt to cover up their origin.
