During the ongoing Al-Aqsa Flood/Iron Swords War in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian terrorist organizations in Gaza, especially Hamas, have been using cameras to monitor scenes, and as a means of remote control, mainly for timing the initiation of IEDs against the Israel Defense Forces.
In recent months, documentation has surfaced of a number of incidents in which cameras were used, mainly wired vehicle reversing and rear view cameras. In most cases, the cameras were utilized to observe infantry forces approaching a booby-trapped scene. Hamas is making creative use of the wired cameras available in the Gaza Strip to expand its ability to control and exploit the battlefield as much as possible. The choice of wired cameras over wireless cameras likely stems from the nature of the fighting in this densely-populated and built-up arena, subject to constant disturbances and disruptions, mainly due to the IDF’s use of electronic countermeasures that block wireless communication throughout the Gaza Strip, in addition to Hamas’ frequent use of tunnels, where there is no reception.
Hamas has even added the footage from these cameras to its propaganda videos, partly to present a more complete picture of the attacks. In addition, integrating this visual documentation into the organization’s propaganda videos – even if it is not of the highest quality and does not show the final result of the attack – conveys a message to its enemy, in this case Israel, that the organization is following and observing the enemy’s forces in every possible way to gain an advantage in the fighting and be the first to strike.
