Mobius 57/2024 – Spring-Vibration Switches for FPV Drone-Based Improvised Loitering Munitions, Ukraine

Since April 2024, Russian sources have reported several cases of UAVs deployed as improvised loitering munitions carrying explosive payloads fitted with spring-vibration switch initiation systems in Ukraine. These spring-based PCB systems appear to be manufactured by several different Ukrainian manufacturers, one of which makes the U1267 initiation system and distributes it to the Ukrainian forces via his Telegram channel. The manufacturer of the U1267 explains that the main functions are initiation via shock from the impact of the UAV with the target, and a time-delay mechanism for arming and self-destruction of the explosive payload. While the main goal of the initiation system is to initiate the explosive payload upon impact with the target, the spring-vibration sensor poses some anti-handling dangers for EOD and bomb disposal personnel.
