TGA0803 – Large-Scale Drone Swarm Attack Thwarted, Al-Fashir, Sudan

On September 8, 2024, Sudanese Armed Forces soldiers and their allies were targeted with an attack by a large swarm of small drones deployed as improvised loitering munitions in Al-Fashir, capital of North Darfur, Sudan. A large number of reconnaissance UAVs were also deployed in the attack. The improvised loitering munitions carried an improvised payload that has not been documented before. While armed UAV and loitering munition attacks have become a common TTP in the course of the Sudanese Civil War, an attack involving a swarm of small drones deployed as loitering munitions has not been documented to date, which makes this attack distinctive, marking an additional escalation in the Sudanese arena.
