Starting in late February 2026, the Afghan Taliban conducted a series of fixed-wing loitering munition attacks against targets inside Pakistan during a major escalation between the two countries. The attacks occurred amid a month-long conflict marked by Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan, cross-border clashes, and retaliatory Taliban operations. The documented employment of weaponized fixed-wing UAVs by the Afghan Taliban represents a significant new development and marks a notable enhancement of the group’s combat capabilities against a neighboring state maintaining considerable air superiority.
Considering the major attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other areas of Pakistan during April-May 2026 – many attributed to the Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan, TTP) – alongside the Afghan Taliban’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Afghanistan’s military and defense capabilities, it is reasonable to assess that another round of conflict between the two countries is likely only a matter of time. It is also likely that any future escalation will involve further use of similar fixed-wing loitering munitions, including potentially more advanced variants.
