On June 18, 2026, Ukraine launched one of its largest long-range loitering munition attacks against Russia’s energy infrastructure in Moscow. The attack formed part of a month-long deep-strike campaign conducted throughout June. Consistent with Ukraine’s defense strategy, the strikes were intended to degrade Russia’s ability to sustain its war effort by targeting critical energy infrastructure, communications facilities, and military production and weapons manufacturing sites. The primary target damaged in the large-scale attack was the Kapotnya oil refinery, which had also been targeted in a smaller strike on June 16. The attack reportedly involved several Ukrainian long-range strike systems, including the Lyutyi, FP-1, Morok, and newly documented Sichen long-range loitering munitions, together with the Bars hybrid UAV/cruise missile. The significant increase in the tempo of attacks during the June campaign reportedly exacerbated the energy crisis Russia has faced since Ukraine intensified its campaign against the country’s energy infrastructure in August 2025.
