On June 28, 2026, five members of the New People’s Army surrendered to government forces and led security personnel to a forested location in Palanas, Masbate Province, where a large buried weapons cache was recovered. The cache contained numerous IEDs, including dozens of NPA-manufactured Claymore-type mines, improvised anti-personnel IEDs, RC initiation systems, blasting machines, detonating cord, and assorted electrical components associated with IED initiation systems.
Earlier, on June 3, 2026, troops from the 2nd Infantry Battalion seized another cache in Barangay Calapayan, Cawayan, Masbate, containing ammonium nitrate, commercial off-the-shelf RC transmitters and receivers, blasting machines, and other electronic components.
These and other recent seizures demonstrate the NPA’s continued manufacture of its characteristic IED designs. While the devices themselves have changed little over time, recent recoveries indicate an increasing reliance on commercially available RC systems in place of earlier improvised designs.
