Beginning in March 2026, documentation began to emerge regarding the disruption of alleged Security Service of Ukraine operations inside Russia involving smuggled FPV drones. According to Russian reporting, these drones were transported into Russian territory through various methods. They were intended for attacks against high-value military facilities and the targeted killing of senior military personnel. By July 2026, Russian authorities had documented three major disrupted operations involving FPV racing drone-based loitering munitions with claimed autonomous AI-guidance capabilities, as well as a foiled assassination attempt involving the use of an FPV drone.
This apparent trend follows the success of Operation Spider’s Web – the coordinated FPV drone-based loitering munition attacks against Russian airbases in June 2025. That operation demonstrated the feasibility of covertly infiltrating drones into Russia for long-range strike operations.
