In mid-August 2026, the Mon State Defense Force, an anti-junta armed group in southeastern Myanmar documented trials of a locally developed remotely controlled unmanned surface vessel. The footage shows the group testing remote-control and guidance functions on the small craft, while separate imagery shows a boat with a metal frame beneath the hull and a cylindrical munition-like object that may be intended as a future explosive payload. The available documentation therefore indicates an ongoing development effort toward a possible USV WBIED capability rather than a completed operational WBIED.
Although no combat employment of the system has yet been documented, its development reflects growing anti-junta interest in maritime and riverine attack capabilities. If deployed operationally, the platform’s relatively small size and maneuverability could complicate the detection and interception of the USV before it reaches a targeted vessel.
