Unique Anti-Personnel IEDs in the Philippines

On October 26, 2021, Philippines Army forces uncovered an IED workshop in Barangay Dolos, Bulan, Sorsogon. In the workshop, components for IEDs of various sizes and configurations were recovered.

In the past year, anti-personnel IEDs resembling large Claymore-type mines, produced by NPA operatives, have begun to appear. At this stage, the production appears to be limited to the Sorsogon area.

Additionally, improvements have been made to the known small cylindrical NPA IEDs, making them easier to carry, also evidenced in this specific area. The NPA boasts a wide variety of different IEDs, suited to specific TTPs, and their main initiation systems are CW-initiation from afar or RC initiation.
