Mobius report 5/2022 – Series of IED Attacks Targeting Electrical Infrastructure, New Year’s Eve 2021, Thailand

On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2021, there was a series of explosions at five locations, in Muang District and Bannang Sata District, in southern Thailand’s Yala Province. Nine IEDs attached to electricity and telephone poles were initiated in the attacks, causing a series of power outages, and an additional four IEDs were found and neutralized.

Two days later, on January 2, 2022, another IED was planted and discovered on an electricity pole in Raman District, in Yala Province, and was neutralized by bomb disposal technicians.

The following day, January 3, 2022, an IED initiated on another electricity pole in Than To, in Yala Province and in the course of a sweep the following day, another IED attached to an electricity pole was discovered and neutralized.

In all of the documented incidents, red fire extinguishers were used to case the IEDs, and all were fitted with identical electronic timers, known to be used by militants in Thailand’s Deep South.
