Mobius report 83/2022 – Instructional Video – Modifying Mortar Bomb Fuzes for Use as Armed UAV Ammunition, Ukraine

Mortar bombs are the main ammunition used for large armed UAVs in the war in Ukraine, as well as in other conflict zones around the world. When using standard mortar bombs, there are several options for their initiation, including the manufacture and installation of an improvised point-detonating fuse, or the use of standard mortar fuzes that need to be modified to cancel the arming mechanism. Recently, an instructional video demonstrating the disassembly, modification and reassembly of a fuze for a Yugoslavian M73 60 mm mortar bomb was posted by a Ukrainian instructor, in which the UT-M68P1 fuze arming procedure and its attachment to the mortar bomb to enable its use as ammunition for armed drones are explained. The advantages of operating large armed UAVs, despite the high cost of the drones, lies in their ability to carry a heavy payload with a large impact effect, as well as the use of standard, high-quality HE ammunition, compared to the payload limitations of smaller drones.
