On September 13, 2023, a work accident occurred as an IED was being placed on the security fence on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. As a result of the explosion, six Palestinian militants were killed. In recent weeks, Gazan Border Units have resumed operations near the border fence with Israel, targeting IDF soldiers and the security fence in IED attacks. Documentation published in the past two weeks shows IEDs placed next to the fence, and the preparation of IEDs by Border Unit militants for the same purpose. Most of the IEDs are familiar to us from previous rounds of escalation in Gaza, but the lack of notable activity by the Border Units for over two years may indicate the start of a new escalation in the arena.
