Mobius Report – Progression in Militant Mortar Fire Capabilities, Myanmar

Indirect fire capabilities, or high trajectory weapons, entered production and use by armed militias across Myanmar in mid-2021, gaining momentum toward the end of the year. Significant development was made mainly in Sagaing Region, in the northwest of the country. While initially, models were mostly crude and non-uniform, over time, there has been a notable progression in terms of armament design, and toward the end of the year, a unique model of improvised mortar rounds, endemic to the arena, entered intensive production and testing, undergoing standardization. From early 2022, this model has become common among most militias operating in the area, and has entered frequent use including in battle scenarios, in tandem with the appearance of various other models in improved designs. As extensive development of improvised weapons continues across the country, between April and June 2022, a number of different trends was observed. These included an increase in the size of the armaments and launch platforms; the initial use of multi-barrel launchers; and the introduction of methods for remote firing. We anticipate each of these trends will expand in the coming months, concurrent with that of other types of high trajectory weapons, such as improvised rockets, and shoulder-fired launchers.
