On June 19, 2026, an under-vehicle IED was emplaced beneath a local police Toyota pickup truck while it was parked outside a mosque during Friday afternoon prayers in Narathiwat Province, southern Thailand. The device initiated, causing minor damage to the vehicle but no casualties. The incident represented a departure from the typical target selection observed in Thailand’s southern border provinces, where Malay Muslim militants generally avoid attacks against targets associated with the local Muslim community.
A similar case occurred in May 2026, when multiple IEDs were used to attack the Halal Food Industry Promotion Center in Pattani Province. Following the explosions, security forces discovered several additional unexploded IEDs at the site.
These incidents suggest that although attacks against the Muslim community and Muslim-associated sites are generally not a primary objective of the militant groups operating in southern Thailand, such locations may nevertheless be exploited as convenient settings for attacks and assassination attempts – primarily targeting security forces – despite the inherent risk of collateral damage to the local Muslim population.
