In late October 2024, a video was posted on Telegram showcasing the interception of a Russian Gerbera UAV filmed by an attacking Ukrainian FPV racing drone. The Gerbera UAV is being increasingly used by Russian forces, mostly as a decoy UAV alongside Geran-2 loitering munitions launched in waves. Of note, the Gerbera is not the only model of decoy UAV being employed by Russian forces.
Decoy UAVs offer a cost-effective way to confuse and mislead enemy forces. By simulating larger or more valuable targets, these decoys manipulate enemy radar systems and provoke unnecessary responses, highlighting the potential dangers of wasted resources that could leave genuine targets vulnerable. According to information from various sources, this tactic has proven effective in the Ukrainian theater against traditional defenses.
