Mobius report 42/2025 – Armored Vehicles of the Mexican Cartels – Progression

Since their emergence in the late 2011s, armored vehicles, commonly dubbed monstruos (“monsters”), narco-tanks or simply technicals, have become an iconic feature of Mexican cartels. The designs of these improvised fighting vehicles vary widely across armed groups: some favor large, intimidating platforms with heavy armor, while others prioritize discretion. The Sinaloa Cartel has increasingly opted to modify civilian vehicles, often stolen, retrofitted with internal armor and ballistic glass. These discreet platforms blend concealment with moderate protection, enabling mobility in contested areas.

One of the earliest documented uses of a new tactical innovation appeared on June 10, 2025, when a CDS vehicle was documented with a hydraulic roof-lift mechanism. This system elevates a protected gunner position, allowing engagement of ground targets while providing overhead cover from aerial threats, particularly armed UAVs.

On April 17, 2025, the Colombian Army seized an armored vehicle operated by the 33rd FARC front in Tibú, northern Colombia. The vehicle reflected Mexican monstruo design influence, with reports indicating technical support and knowledge transfer from Mexican cartel operatives.
