Mobius report 58/2026 – Sticky IED Attached to Senior Syrian Army Commander’s Vehicle, Aleppo, Syria

On July 18, 2026, documentation showing the neutralization of a sticky IED attached beneath the vehicle of a senior Syrian Army officer in Al-Rai, northern Aleppo Governorate, Syria, was published by Syrian security forces.

The sticky IED featured a bowl-shaped body fitted with a divided cover, one section of which could be opened to provide access to a compartment housing the initiation system adjacent to the main charge occupying the remainder of the container. The device incorporated an improvised electric detonator connected to the main charge by blue detonating cord, together with an electronic RC initiation system powered by 9 V batteries and fitted with a black rocker switch.

Similar sticky IEDs have previously been documented in use by militant groups in Syria, particularly by Islamic State operatives in assassination attacks. Comparable devices were also documented in a large weapons seizure on July 28, 2026, following operations against IS cells in the city of Aleppo and the adjacent districts of Azaz and Al-Bab, in northern Syria. The operation followed a wave of IS attacks between May and August 2026 against a range of Syrian government targets, including security personnel and public sector employees under the government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa.
