Between July and October 2025, documentation of fiber-optic-guided drones used by militants in Mali, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Sudan was posted online. These first appearances of fiber-optic-guided drones in Africa are likely influenced by the introduction of electronic warfare tools into the service of local militaries, as well as the guidance of Russian and Ukrainian troops dispersed across the region.
