In recent months, Russian forces have increased their use of the Italmas loitering munition, including repeated strikes against residential areas in Sumy Oblast, northeastern Ukraine. Manufactured by Russia’s ZALA Aero Group, the Italmas features a distinctive forward-mounted internal combustion engine and carries a shaped-charge warhead initiated by multiple simple push-button limit switches positioned behind the engine. The UAV is equipped with a camera mounted on the underside of one wing, enabling real-time video transmission throughout its mission. The Italmas reflects Russia’s ongoing effort to diversify its loitering munition inventory and supports its strategy of conducting coordinated loitering munition attack waves.
