During February 2026, Myitkyina civilian airport in northern Myanmar was targeted in two aerial attacks involving FPV drone-based improvised loitering munitions, allegedly carried out by anti-junta militant groups.
The first attack, on February 12, reportedly involved the interception of two FPV drones within the airport compound. The second attack, on February 20, struck a stationary aircraft belonging to a local commercial airline during passenger boarding for a domestic flight to Mandalay, central Myanmar.
As observed in similar incidents in recent years, civilian airports and aircraft face a significant threat in countries experiencing ongoing internal armed conflicts, whether through deliberate targeting or collateral spillover. This threat is further exacerbated by the increasing availability and use of improvised loitering munitions based on COTS FPV drones.
