Al-Shabaab Attacks in Mogadishu, Somalia

The year 2022 was met in Mogadishu, Somalia, with five IED attacks against various targets in early January 2022. At the start of the month, an SVBIED  initiated as it approached a police checkpoint. About 10 days later, an SVBIED initiated near the city’s international airport, allegedly targeting a convoy of UN vehicles. In the following days, there were two PBIED attacks – one targeting the government spokesman, and the other a tea house full of soldiers. Toward the end of the month, a roadside IED targeted the vehicle of a senior police commander.

The concentration of attacks in the city of Mogadishu in recent months is probably related to the postponement of the elections, scheduled for February 2022, and rising tensions between the various political organizations in the country, readily exploited by Al-Shabaab, who carried out the suicide bombings to foment chaos in the capital.
