In recent months, Ukrainian forces have discovered previously unseen Russian Tactical Unattended Ground Sensor systems in Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts, in northeastern Ukraine. Reports and visual documentation suggest these types of systems were found in locations where Ukrainian forces were targeted with explosive devices. The new Russian T-UGS found by the Ukrainian forces are modular systems that include different sensors and early warning attachments, commonly deployed by special reconnaissance units. T-UGS systems enable these units to process near real-time information from a chosen location according to the mission’s objectives, whether intelligence gathering, defending sensitive sites or eliminating enemy targets. The documentation suggests these systems are deployed with explosive charges. T-UGS is rarely documented in the battlefield and the use of these new Russian systems and their optional application with mines and explosive charges provides a unique case-study for EOD personnel and other military branches and security agencies.
