On the night between June 30 and July 1, 2025, Kirkuk International Airport, located in Kirkuk Governorate, in northern Iraq, was attacked with 122 mm rockets. One rocket struck near the military compound at the airport, causing minor damage; another rocket hit a civilian home located near the airport.
Debris found at the impact sites not only confirmed the rockets were of Iranian manufacture, but also indicated they were precision-guided rockets, produced by Iran in recent years and showcased in several Iranian arms exhibitions.
There is very limited technical information available on these rockets, and it seems this was their first operational use by a local Iran-backed Shiite group. However, their appearance highlights a growing trend among Iran and its proxy militias to expand their arsenal of precision-guided weapons.
This trend is also gaining momentum among Iran’s allies, including North Korea and China, both of which are also increasingly enriching their rocket and fuze inventories with guidance and precision capabilities.
